Recent Provider Changes (2025-2026)

  • Q Link Wireless → StandUp Wireless: Q Link's Lifeline business was acquired by StandUp Wireless in late 2024. The Q Link brand has been retired.
  • Cintex Wireless → AirTalk Wireless: Cintex has merged into AirTalk Wireless. All Cintex accounts are now managed through airtalkwireless.com.
  • ACP Ended June 2024: The Affordable Connectivity Program is no longer active. Some old sites may still reference outdated "ACP + Lifeline" combo plans.

What is the Lifeline Program?

The Lifeline program is a federal benefit established by the FCC in 1985 to ensure that all Americans have access to essential phone service. Eligible low-income households receive a monthly discount of up to $9.25/month (or up to $34.25/month on Tribal lands) toward phone or internet service from a participating provider.

Note: The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ended on June 1, 2024. Many provider websites and competitor sites still advertise "Unlimited Everything" plans that were actually ACP + Lifeline combos. Those deals no longer exist. The data, minutes, and hotspot allowances listed on our site reflect the current Lifeline-only plans as of 2026.

In 2016, the program was modernized to include broadband internet access. Today, most Lifeline providers offer a free smartphone with unlimited talk, text, and a monthly data allowance at no cost to you. There are no contracts, no bills, and no credit checks.

How to Choose a Provider

Check Coverage in Your Area

Providers use different networks (T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T). Pick one with strong signal where you live and work.

Compare Monthly Data

Plans range from 3GB to Unlimited data. If you stream video or use maps often, prioritize higher data allowances.

Look at the Phone Offered

Most providers include a free smartphone. Check if the phone model meets your needs (camera quality, storage, screen size).

Consider Hotspot Data

Some plans include hotspot data you can use for your laptop or tablet. This is valuable if you need internet on multiple devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch Lifeline providers?

Yes. You can transfer your Lifeline benefit to a different provider at any time. Contact the new provider to start the transfer process. You will only have one Lifeline benefit at a time.

Is there really no cost?

The Lifeline benefit covers the full cost of basic phone service. You pay nothing for the phone, monthly service, talk, text, and data. Some providers may offer upgrades at additional cost, but the basic plan is free.

How long does the application take?

Most online applications take 5-10 minutes. After approval, your free phone is typically shipped within 7-10 business days.

Do I need to renew my enrollment?

Yes. You must recertify your eligibility annually. Your provider will notify you when it is time to recertify. Failure to recertify will result in loss of service.
